Environmental Projects

There is nothing quite like munching on fresh vegetables picked straight from the garden!  Our school vegetable garden is flourishing and the children are reaping the rewards of their hard work – what a great way to learn responsibility. Arcadia PS is an active participant in Hornsby Council’s Ready, Set, Grow program which is aimed at encouraging and supporting the creation of sustainable school fruit and vegetable gardens.

Nothing goes to waste as we use our food scraps for compost and tasty snacks for our resident chickens. Years 3 and 4 collect the scraps for composting from each class’s morning munch and crunch fruit break. They have been involved from the outset, choosing the garden site, planning what to plant, learning how to grow plants from seeds, taking responsibility for watering the garden and of course selling the produce. Our wonderful canteen includes the fresh vegetables in their menu.

Our school garden is a great way for us to promote environmental and sustainability learning and to connect our students with healthy food and lifestyles. In fact, we use the garden as a classroom!
